Broadband Solutions for Cable Operators

Latens CAS is a next generation, standards compliant Conditional Access System (CAS) optimized for the broadband digital cable market. The system has been built on the knowledge and experience of the cable industry to be standards compliant with DVB® and Cablelabs. Within these standards, we’ve taken a fresh look at the technical advantages created through the innovative use of improvements in software security to deliver CA solutions that provide Cable Operators with all the advantages of downloadable software-based CA.

Latens CAS is differentiated from legacy CA systems by the following key features:

  • Latens CAS is a pure software solution which replaces the proprietary smart cards or embedded set-top solutions of traditional CAS vendors with a dynamically downloadable CAS technology using innovative Secure Software Modules. This provides a more secure anti-piracy strategy at a much lower cost.
  • Latens has designed the system with the flexibility to support the diverse range business models encountered in various digital cable markets including unlimited basic and premium tier subscriptions, Pay per View, Time shift TV, PVR/DVR and On-demand services.
  • Supports most content formats; HD and SD; MPEG2; MPEG4/H.264.
  • The use of open standards, such as DVB® Simulcrypt, and downloadable CA software ensures that operators are no longer locked into a single CA supplier.  
  • Latens CAS is commercially and technically scalable from systems comprising of hundreds of subscribers to large multi-million subscriber deployments.
  • Hybrid Networks; A single Latens CAS headend can manage hybrid networks of DOCSIS based cable, IPTV over Fiber, DSL and DOCSIS, and now, with the launch of Latens BCAS, one-way broadcast cable systems as well.

Telco TV - IPTV

Most vendors offer IPTV operators just one security solution. We believe that this 'one size fits all' approach to security makes little sense when you consider the differences between a local Telco operator with less than 10,000 customers and a national “tier one” operator that has the potential of providing IPTV services to millions of subscribers. At these extremes, TelcoTV operators have very different architectures, face very different challenges, have different business models and are likely to face different security challenges.

We provide two product architectures both based on the same core system:

  • Latens IPCAS,  designed for larger operators with large distributed networks and choices of headend management systems and IPTV middleware architectures
  • Latens FCAS, designed for smaller operators and start-ups. FCAS is pre-integrated, for each local market, with leading middleware systems and set top boxes.

Both of these systems are extensively deployed and proven in operators around the world. Which system is better for a particular operator very much depends upon expected future growth and the business model and content packaging strategies that are likely to be employed.
